Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival Yellowknife
Welcome to Canada‘s Northwest Territory! Your tour guide will meet you at the airport and offer you trans-portation to your hotel, where you will meet your fellow travelers. Your guide will run the group through a brief orientation. Afterwards, you will have time to explore the city of Yellowknife, that lies right next to the Great Slave Lake. Day 2: Yellowknife
Our first drive will bring us on the Ingraham Trail where we will visit the Cameron Falls, the first waterfalls of our trip. Later, we will see Prelude Lake, that offers many activities like boat trips, canoeing or hiking. It is a great stop for a nice picnic. The Ingraham Trail is very popular, especially during winter time, because it is the starting point of the popular TV show ‘Ice Road Truckers’. In the evening, we will be back in Yellowknife to end our first great day with a visit in one of the bars or restaurants.(Overnight hotel accommodation in Yellowknife)
Day 3: Drive to Fort Providence
Yellowknife is not only the capital of the Northwest Territories, it is also known as the diamond capital. This small city, that possesses every advantage of a capital, has 90 diverse nations and therefore, a truly unique atmosphere. Yellowknife was established because of the gold mining wealth, but now prospers from the dia-mond industry. This city offers many things to see and even more to do. There is something for every taste, canoeing, hiking, fishing, swimming, playing golf or seeing interesting cultural points of interest. Amongst the sites we will visit are the Prince-of-Wales cultural center and the igloo parliament building. The drive to Fort Providence will lead us through the Mackenzie Bison Sanctuary. In this area, we must pay attention because there is a high chance of seeing wildlife on the side of the road. In between, we will have a nice picnic lunch break at the Chan Lake, a beautiful place to rest and enjoy the view. Day 4: Drive to Hay River
Before we leave Fort Providence, we will visit a very interesting little craft store, that has a great selection woven goods made from moose hair. Then, we hit the road again now towards Hay River. Hay River itself is the starting point of many tours going to the Great Slave Lake. In addition to that, Hay River is popular for the ‘Ice Pilots’ TV show and there is a good chance to see one of the famous ‘Buffalo Air’ machines. (Overnight hotel accommodation in Hay River)
Day 5: Hay River
Today, will take a trip to the Twin Falls Gorge Territorial Park and enjoy the 2 km long hike between Alexan-dra and Louise Falls. The unique Falls paved their way through a 400 million years old rock and is also the pride of the Dene First Nations. They call the Alexandra Falls: “Hatto deh Naili “, which means “Holy place of strength “. With a little bit of luck, we have the chance to encounter wildlife again; bears, lynx, fox, wolves and maybe moose. (Overnight hotel accommodation in Hay River)
Day 6: Drive to Fort Simpson
After breakfast, we will be back on the Road driving towards Fort Simpson, where we will find many beautiful natural sights. We will stop on the way to take a closer look at the Lady Evelyn Falls or the McNallie Creek Falls. Those are the perfect spots to enjoy a nice picnic with a great view. We will reach those picturesque waterfalls and a deep gorges canyon by following a short hiking trail. A stop at the Sambaa Deh Falls Territorial Park is a must while in the NWT, we will hike the short trail to go enjoy the impressive vistas of the Sambaa Deh and Coral Falls before heading to our final destination of the day. Fort Simpson has 1,200 residents, is located at the confluence of the Liard and the Mackenzie River, and is the main hub for tours in the Nahanni National Park. Once arrived, we can go to the visitor information center to gather some interesting facts about the Park and see the variety of tours they offer. Day 7 - 8: Fort Simpson
During one of the days in Fort Simpson, we highly recommend you take a sightseeing flight on a small bush plane over the Nahanni National Park. You have the option to fly over and land close to the brea-thtaking Virgina Falls. This is one of the best experiences you can have! You will be amazed by the beauty of this fascinating landscape!On the other day, we can explore Fort Simpson and if someone prefers more adventures, there are many different options. For example, go on a motor boat ride on the Mackenzie River, paddle the South Nahanni, the Flat River, or hike on one of the many beautiful trails. Day 9: Drive to Fort Nelson
In the morning, we will hit the road again and drive from Fort Simpson on the Liard Highway southbound. No matter what weather conditions we will face, this Road is highly impressive with its panorama views on the Nahanni Mountains and the Liard River, especially in the Blackstone Territorial Park. We will pass Fort Liard, a block house town that lies in one of the oldest populated regions of the north. They produce impressive handmade birch bark baskets, decorated with traditional ornaments from the Dene First Nations. These crafts are very famous in the north.We then enter British Columbia and our first destination is Fort Nelson. Day 10: Drive to Muncho Lake Provincial Park
Today’s journey brings us to Muncho Lake. Along our drive it is almost impossible not to see wildlife. In the remote north-east part of British Columbia are living Mountain Goats, Bison’s, Moose, Caribous, Elks, Wolfs, Coyotes, Fox, Lynx, Black and Brown Bears. Day 11: Muncho Lake Provincial Park
We are now in the heart of Canada, the fabulous Rocky Mountains. This iconic landscape is truly impressive and besides, we will have a good chance to see more wildlife as we are deep in the Muskwa-Kechika National park. Today, we will hike up the mountain trails in the fascinating Muncho Lake Provincial Park and enjoy the nature and the magnificent surroundings. Here we have access to many outdoor activities like paddling in a canoe on Muncho Lake.Moreover, it is also a great spot to gather your energy, rest and internalize the moment. Day 12: Watson Lake
Welcome to the Yukon! We follow the Alaska Highway until we reach Watson Lake today. This town is home to the famous Sign Post Forest, that has currently over 72,000 signs from all around the globe and counting. Maybe you have a sign with you and would like to add it to the collection to be a part of this tradition.In the evening, we can visit the Northern Lights Space and Science Center, where we can see an amazing northern lights show. Day 13: Whitehorse
We will stay on the Alaska Highway today, driving over the Nisutlin Bay Bridge, the longest Bridge of the Highway, driving through Teslin and past Marsh Lake. While we are driving, we are not only enjoying the beautiful landscapes; you will learn many interesting facts about the great ALCAN Highway construction.In the evening, we will arrive in Whitehorse, Yukon’s historic capital. Day 14: Skagway
From Whitehorse, a day trip takes us down the Klondike Highway South to the historic Alaskan town of Skagway. On our way, we will pass through a wonderful variety of ecoregions and alpine landscapes, as we cross over the continental divide. You will see the extraordinary colors of Emerald Lake (also called locally Rainbow Lake), the scenic lakeside village of Carcross, the famous White Pass on the way to Skagway and the Pacific coast. We will also stop to see the smallest desert in the world!For an even more breathtaking panorama, we highly recommend you take the historic White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad (optional). It is, without a doubt, one of the best scenic train rides you will ever take! In the evening, we will be back in Whitehorse, where we can enjoy one last delicious dinner together. Day 15: Departure Whitehorse
Chances are, there is still plenty to do and see in Whitehorse. Explore the city, take a walk on the millenni-um trail, visit the authentic S.S. Klondike (a paddle wheeler restored from the gold rush time), or any other of the many historic sites. This day will bring closer the gold rush history. Ruby Range will provide your transportation to the airport or to a connecting program.
