Yukon on Foot: Our Best Guided Tours for Hikers and Experienced Trekkers

A true land of trails, Yukon offers hikers an astounding variety of paths to explore – from the once-inescapable Chilkoot Trail, to remote and untouched valleys In Tombstone Territorial Park. Throughout our tours, hikers often have the opportunity to spot wildlife such as moose, caribou, Dall sheep, falcons, and eagles, and our guides are there to help you explore the most beautiful landscapes available.

For the intermediate but dedicated hiker, our Yukon and Alaska Explorer Tour is an absolute treat. This two-week trip is a true overview of the best trails of the Great North, featuring visits to Denali National Park, the Coast Mountains, and several coastal fjords. At night, our small group enjoys local culture and comfortable accommodations before setting out for a new adventure the following day.

If, however, you’d like to be completely immersed in nature, take a look at our hiking tours through Tombstone Territorial Park. Both of our tours in this case offer on-site camping and take you through untouched flora and fauna.

With our Remote Valleys Trek, we fly straight into the heart of Tombstone Park and enjoy four days of peaceful, alpine trekking. In Canada’s Patagonia Tour, we spend six days backpacking from site to site, hiking from rugged mountains to alpine lakes through the tundra.

Finally, if you’d like a historical twist to your hiking trip this summer, our Stampeders’ Route was made for you. Trekking down the Chilkoot trail, you will climb in the footsteps of explorers before you, and see the coastal Alaskan rainforest give way to delicate alpine tundra before your very eyes. This five-day trek (7-day tour) will take you to lake Bennet and by float plane to the Yukon river, where so many once embarked on their Gold Rush adventure to Dawson City.

F.A.Q.

What can be expected in terms of weather?
Our summers are beautiful with a lot of daylight. During June, July and August, you can expect comfortable daytime temperatures ranging from 12°C to 16°C on average. That said, mother nature can be unpredictable and you have to be ready for everything including rain, wind, and potentially snow as well as heat waves. Keep in mind things can change quickly and the best way to avoid any discomfort is to be prepared with the right equipment. To get more information about the weather in the Yukon you can visit the Environment Canada website here.
Once you book, we will send you a detailed list of material to bring on your trip.
All the material is provided except for you personal gear, sleeping bag and sleeping mat. We have a rental program for sleeping bags and sleeping mats but quantities are limited. Contact us prior to your arrival to check availability. If you have missing items, do not worry, we have a wonderful outdoor store in Whitehorse.
Yes, you can bring your equipment. Make sure to get a dry bag to keep it safe from rain and humidity and keep in mind that it will be extra weight in your backpack. On long hikes, it's always better to limit the weight to a minimum.
Mosquito populations vary according to temperature, rainfall, and wind. Every year is different but if you bring a good repellent and proper clothing, it won't be a problem.   Wondering what type of repellent to use? Take a look at this article to make the proper choice!
We strongly suggest a minimum of -5°C comfort zone.
We recommend a light hiking boot or a good hiking shoe. You should also bring sandals or something comfortable to wear in camp.
Yes, you can! Your guide will take a look at it during the pre-trip meeting to make sure it meets our standards.
On hiking trips you will be on the trail for 4 to 8 hours every day. We take brakes and make the experience enjoyable and approchable.
The material and food will be divided between the participants. The weight of your backpack depends on what you decide to bring and if you are sharing a tent. You can expect to carry between 15 to 25 kilos.
You have to be in good shape. You will be carrying weight on your back and hiking 4 to 8 hours per day.
Your guide will carefully prepare a menu taking into consideration food restrictions and weight. You will be eating well on the trail!
There will be outhouses in camp. If you need to go in nature during the day, your guide will instruct you the proper technique and give you what you need.
There is a good chance of seeing bears from a safe distance. Your guide will give you a briefing on what to do if you encounter a bear on your own and you will always carry a bear spray if you wonder alone away from camp. In most cases, bears are uninterested to interact with humans and if you respect the basic rules of bear safety, chances of a negative interaction are extremely limited. If you want to learn more about bear safety in the Yukon, please consult this ressource.
Your guide is trained to face emergency situations and is carrying a satellite communication device at all times. In case of emergency, Ruby Range Adventure will organise an evacuation.
Our groups are generally between 4 to 12 people.
No problem, you need to specify your dietary restrictions at time of booking and your guide will take them into consideration for the meal planning.
Many guests have health issues: medications, allergies, chronic conditions, old injuries, physical limitations. It will not stop you from enjoying an adventure with us. Everyone is asked to fill a medical information form that will be used in case of an emergency. You can also notify your guide of any condition you think might limit you during the trip.
Helping out is part of the adventures. Guests are expected to help their guide with certain tasks around camp and in the kitchen when necessary.
Yes, there will be time to take pictures. Keep in mind you don't want to slow the group down but we take regular brakes for pictures and snacks.
Depending on your trip you might use a water filter or water purification tablets. We do not take risks with food or water.
